Financial Markets and Risk Management

Programme provides a solid understanding of key features of financial markets and inherent risk factors: ‘exchange- and interest rate’ risks, ‘credit- and liquidity’ risks, fraud and compliance issues. Using an enterprise risk management framework, participants will learn how to relate business activities and business asset characteristics to market risks, focusing on activities such hedging, insuring and management of operational risks in the context of executing successful business strategies.

Participants will acquire a framework demonstrating the complex interactions of business operations with financial strategies.

- conflicts of interest in organizations with divided responsibilities
At the end of the course, managers of business operations will be able to communicate more effectively with colleagues responsible for finance, as well as external analysts and providers of funds -- and vice versa.

Participants should have a basic level of knowledge, equivalent to knowhow acquired in a course like ‘Finance for Non-Financial Managers’.

Dr. Gunter DUFEY, Professor (em.) of Corp. Strategy, International Business and Finance, joined the faculty of the University of Michigan Business School in 1968. His academic interests center on INTERNATIONAL MONEY AND CAPITAL MARKETS as well as on FINANCIAL POLICY OF MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS, specializing in issues on Corporate Governance, Financing Policies and Intl. Expansion Strategy of business firms.
Over the years, he held appointments as National Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University (1980-81), he administered the LBRP Chair of Intl. Corp. Finance at WHU Otto Beisheim Graduate School, near Koblenz, Germany (1993-2000), and as Visiting Scholar with the Ministry of Finance (FAIR) in Tokyo, Japan. He also holds an honorary professorship at Universitaet des Saarlandes, Saarbruecken and was Visiting and Adj. Professor at Nanyang Business School/NTU Singapore (2000-01). He has published extensively.
Prof Dufey has been a member of the board of directors of Fuji Logitech, Tokyo/Shizuoka from 1994-98 and continues to serve on the Boards of Guinness/Atkinson Funds (USA) and several subsidiaries of General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC):
He was an expert witness on several high profile cases in the United States, such as Wells Fargo vs Citibank and Proctor & Gamble vs. Bankers Trust, and adviser to the Federal Court.
He lectured and traveled extensively in the Far East and from 09/2001 to 02/2003 has been employed with McKinsey and Co, Singapore, supporting the Corporate Governance Practice of the firm in Asia. He holds an appointment as Professorial Fellow in Banking and Finance of NBS, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and is a principal of PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS ASSOCIATES.
He divides his time between homes in Singapore and Ann Arbor, MI. USA.
